Hitachi shiro-gami white paper steel features a high carbon steel core with 16 low carbon steel outer layers. This steel is very pure, in which it has very little impurities such as phosphorus and sulfur in the steel's make up. Shiro-gami or white paper steel is the closest steel to the traditional Tamahagane steel.
 
The feedback or comments I get the most from those using the suminagashi is that it's not only sharp and smooth but it makes all their other razors suddenly feel blunt.
